Celebrating Maimonides in Cairo (1935): Jewish historiography, Islamic philosophy and the <i>nahḍa</i>

The year 1935 marked the 800th anniversary of birth Jewish scholar Moses ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides. This article focuses on representations Maimonides a cultural hero during this year, taking its central case commemorations in Cairo. Specifically, examines historiography and discussions past Egypt tied with debates revival, commonly nahḍa. It argues first all that Egyptian non-Jewish intellectuals dominantly embraced philosopher, to be studied context Arabic Islamic thought. Second, these stressed critical role Jews thought at large had played transmission knowledge West. Third, for historians who organised celebrations, symbolised rich heritage intellectual culture world, which they perceived current decline stagnation.
